Why Old Age Homes Are Increasing Today

The older population is rapidly on the increase, and as the cost of living increases, many seniors are unable to afford their residences. There are many factors that contribute to this problem – the rapid rise in inflation rates, high mortgage rates, higher property taxes, and diminished purchasing power.

A recent study found that over 50% of all people who reach the age of 65 cannot afford retirement housing in any way shape or form. Ever since the aging population began to grow, there has been an increase in the number of elderly people who would like to live in an old age home.

Some may question this change because these homes were traditionally seen as places to send anyone who was deemed too old or frail to care for themselves. Many changes over the years have created a new view of what old age homes are all about.

We will talk about a few reasons why old age homes are increasing today in this article:

Children Moving to Other Countries

The way that children are being raised in countries around the world is becoming increasingly different. The age of migration has dramatically changed over the last couple of decades, with more and more young people moving abroad within their own lifespan.

In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of children moving with their families to other countries. In this article, I will discuss the most recent statistics on the subject and give insight as to why it is happening.

A new study produced by UNICEF estimates that every hour, 8 children move to another country for often short periods of time. This mobility can be caused by a variety of factors, such as natural disasters and conflict.

The UNICEF reports that at least 250 million children today live outside their own countries. Roughly half of these children are not living up to their full potential due to the disruptions in their childhoods.

Issue of Safety for Senior Citizens

The issue of safety of senior citizen community has increased in recent years because of an upsurge of violence against the elderly. These homes are increasing because elders are worried about their own safety and want to be sure they’re not taking any risks. Some people might think that this is a solution to the problem, but it’s simply alleviating the symptoms, not the cause – thus perpetuating the cycle of violence.

The number of old age homes is on the rise with the increased safety risks and needs for housing among older adults. For instance, with the recent death of a foster mom at an old age home in Florida, there has been more concern about the safety of these facilities.

The horror stories that keep coming out of these retirement centers might be enough to make any person avoid them. From mold to infections to abuse, they’re not always as safe as advertised.

Proper Attention to Medical Care

The physical, mental, and social well-being of residents in old age homes should not be neglected. Conditions such as hearing loss, dementia, and arthritis can prevent older adults from participating in activities that are beneficial for them.

These ailments can lead to depression. Furthermore, an insufficient number of nursing assistants leads to neglecting patients or providing inadequate care for them by distributing work among health care providers.

The elderly are often forgotten when it comes to medical care. Their cases are often not seen as an emergency, even if they are in tremendous pain. Often times the staff at old age homes will administer medication at certain times of the day and neglect to check on their patients until later on.

If your loved one is living in an old age home, you should inquire about their policies for administering medicine and find out how often they check up on them.
